Census 2021 – first results

image of UK Census 2021
The first results from Census 2021 are out. Most areas of the UK saw a percentage rise in population over the ten years from 2011-2021 with the average rise across England being 6.6%.
All of our local areas saw percentage rises in population:
  • Vale of White Horse +14.8%
  • Cherwell +13.5%
  • South Oxfordshire +11.1%
  • West Oxfordshire +9.0%
  • South east average +7.5%
  • Oxford +6.7%
Maybe of more interest, but no surprise, is that our population has continued to age. Across England in 2021, more than one in six people were aged 65 years and over on Census Day, 2021. This is the highest ever recorded percentage, although the most populous age group now is 50-54.
There has been a 20% increase in people aged 65 years and over, but only a 3.6% increase in people aged 15-64. In 32 local authority areas, there has been an increase of more than 30% in those aged 65 years and over.
