Govt. lifts bar on foreign Nurses

Jeremy Hunt has listened to lobbying from the care sector and lifted a bar on foreign nurses. Nurses are to be added to the Government’s immigration shortage occupation list after warnings from NHS leaders that safety was at risk if they could not hire more staff from overseas.

Sadly, but predictably the headlines around this have yet again focused on health. However, the crisis affecting the social care sector has been made all the worse by this restriction on recruitment and  made the role a scarce resource with not enough qualified nurses to fill the essential posittions in care and nursing homes.

The Government believes the lifting of the ban will avert a staffing crisis on hospital wards. It may be too late for social care for this winter.
