Community Dental Services

Community Dental Services, commissioned by Oxfordshire County Council, is an oral health improvement team delivering FREE training to care homes and similar settings across Oxfordshire.

In partnership with OACP, CDS and Oxfordshire County Council is delivering three webinars on Oral Health.

Training for care staff

  • is usually delivered online and last approximately 90 minutes.
  • will raise awareness of the importance of daily mouth care as well as practical advice for those people that are dependent or need assistance in oral care techniques.
  • provide carers with the knowledge and ability to plan and deliver daily mouth care in any setting including supported living, care homes and domiciliary care.
  • provide your managers and staff with the tools for being CQC compliant in oral care as well as carers being more confident in delivering oral care.

On completion of your training with Community Dental Services, your setting can choose to become Life Long Smiles accredited. By agreeing to participate, the care homes would need to meet a set of standards based on the NICE guidelines for oral health in care homes. Implementing the standards will ensure you provide optimum oral healthcare in your residential setting. CDS will support your care home to work towards achieving the standards and monitor good practice.

Once all evidence is collected and the standards have been met, the homes will then receive their award certificate to bed is displayed in the home.

Nice Guidelines (NG48)

This guideline covers oral health, including dental health and daily mouth care, for adults in care homes.

The aim is to maintain improve their ensure timely access treatment.

Life Long Smiles Accreditation

On completion of your training with Community Dental services, your setting can choose to become Life Long Smiles accredited. By agreeing to participate, the care homes would need to meet a set of standards based on the NICE guidelines for oral health in care homes. Implementing the standards will ensure you provide optimum oral healthcare in your residential settings. CDS will support the home to work towards achieving the standards and monitor good practice.
Once all evidence is collected and the standards have been met, the homes will then receive their award certificate to be displayed in the home.

Oral Health Toolkit for Carers

The Oral Health Toolkit for carers has been designed by OHIMP Oxfordshire in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council.

The toolkit takes roughly 30 minutes to complete and covers basic messages around toothbrushing, diet and dental visits.

Stay Smiling – mouthcare e-learning for care staff

This programme has been designed to provide oral health training and empower and support care teams in delivering mouthcare, so that care home residents can Stay Smiling for longer.
