Resources for the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)

Welcome Data Security and Protection Toolkit

Care providers need to store and share information securely – on paper and digitally.

The Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) is a really helpful annual self-assessment for health and care organisations.

All CQC-registered care providers should complete the DSPT at least once a year. The deadline for 2023/24 is 30th June 2024.

This short, animated film explains how the DSPT helps care providers – including how it opens up access to shared information systems.

As a care provider, it shows you what you need to do to keep people’s information safe, and to protect your business from the risk of a data breach or a cyber attack. It covers both paper and digital records. And if reassures everyone you work with that you are taking data security seriously.

The DSPT can open up real opportunities. For example, you must have completed the DSPT if you: deliver services under an NHS contract; use a shared health and care records system; or you are applying for NHSmail.

Care providers who are not CQC registered can also use the DSPT to check and improve that data and cyber security arrangements.

Video available online from Digital Care Hub. The Better Security, Better Care programme provides free guidance, practical tools, templates and direct support to help you to register, complete and publish the Toolkit.

What is the Data Security and Protection Toolkit?

“The DSPT is an online self-assessment tool for data security, supporting organisations to ensure that they have the right processes and practices in place to manage and hold data safely” NHS 2020.

It is compulsory to successfully complete the DSPT if you have an NHSmail account. It is highly recommended that all CQC registered care providers complete this data protection assessment (regardless of whether or not you have an existing NHSmail Account).

What are the benefits of the DSPT?

  • Digital solutions e.g. proxy access to GP records and NHSmail

  • Increasingly becoming a contractual requirement of providing services to CCG and Local Authorities

  • Completion of the DSPT enables compliance with various legal requirements and legislation

  • Can be linked to CQC KLOEs – one step towards becoming an Outstanding provider

  • Ensures your organisation is safe with its data and cyber security

  • Opportunity to audit processes, systems and policies

  • Reassurance to staff and clients – which shows you take your data protection seriously

  • Accredited and understood by the wider system
